The Vietnam Ministry of Health today reported an additional 14,922 cases of COVID-19, with Ho Chi Minh City accounting for 8,499 alone.
In addition to Ho Chi Minh City’s tally, significant number of cases were reported from Binh Duong (3,676), Dong Nai (986), Long An (564) and Tay Ninh (267).
Compared to the day prior, the number of infections recorded in the country increased by 1,708 cases and Ho Chi Minh City increased by 2,536 cases.
Since the beginning of the epidemic, Vietnam has recorded 501,649 infections and since April 27 (the fourth wave), 497,391 cases have been reported. A total of 12,446 COVID-19 related deaths have been reported after the addition of 308 deaths today.
On September 2, there were 283,221 doses of COVID-19 vaccine injected. Thus, the total number of vaccine doses administered was 20,831,478 doses, of which 17,872,356 doses were administered and 2,959,122 doses were administered.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said Wednesday Vietnam could be facing a lengthy battle against the coronavirus and cannot rely on lockdown and quarantine measures indefinitely.
Vietnam has deployed soldiers and forced residents of its biggest city to stay in their homes in recent weeks, in its most drastic measures yet to fight an outbreak that has shattered what was one of the world’s best containment records.
“We cannot resort to quarantine and lockdown measures forever, as it will cause difficulty for the people and the economy,” he said.
